English Democrats Response

Last week, Bury Action Group sent out a request to all candidates to answer a number of questions on where their party stands on a number of issues, and how they would approach them if elected.

English Democrats - Stephen Morris & Valerie Morris
Constituency - Besses Ward & Holyrood Ward

Dear Sue,

Thank you for your letter, I would first like to tell you a little bit about my family which may give you more understanding about why we would be protecting the services you mention.

I am standing in Besses Ward where we live and my wife Valerie is standing in Holyrood Ward where her 83yr old mother lives and many of her friends.

We have 3 Children, Emma who’s 17 studies at Bury College and hopefully going to University this year, Christopher who’s 15 attends Castlebrook High School where I am also a parent Governor and then Ben who’s 3. Having worked in Public Transport for the past 11yrs and have been a Union official for Unite for the past 8 years, Valerie also works for the Manchester Children’s Hospital in Clinical Audit for the past 10 years (previously Booth Hall & Pendlebury).

As well as attending Castlebrook High School my son plays for Prestwich Town Junior Football club U16s and he attends the Shuttle Centre on a weekly basis in Besses to practice with his band, I have seen firsthand how these types of services are invaluable to the youth of today and we both would oppose any cuts to them.

Budget Cuts

1. We would restore youth service jobs – This has long term effects on society.

2. We would restore the Local Area Partnership Managers - Although I think we need to get into the public and not sit behind desks waiting for the public to attend a meeting.

3. School Crossing Patrols would be restored – This is a health and safety issue for our children, one child death is one to many and I for one would not like to remove a School crossing and then a child gets injured or killed.

4. Park Rangers would be restored.

Transformation Strategy

5. The actions we would take to ensure the public are informed and involved in decisions is also linked to the Area Managers role, but the Councillors also need to be in the Community and not just at election times.

6. We have never believed in outsourcing to the private sector, this only allows company directors and shareholders to profit from the public purse instead of that money going to the public services, our only way would be to vote against any such attempt by the other party’s.

Making an Impact as a Councillor

7. A Councillor is there to represent the ward they are elected in, to many Councillors once elected just sit back and go with flow, they fail to stand up for the ward. I would be contacting the local press, getting residents involved and making sure I am heard by making as much noise as possible.

8. We would both be willing to use our votes to prevent the setting of a legal budget

  1. I have sent a copy of some leaflets that have gone out in Besses Ward and in Holyrood Ward, this will show that we are not just responding to the questions but that we have put this out in our leaflets.
