Top GP spearheads ‘Defend the NHS’ campaign in Bury

PRESS RELEASE: Bury North Constituency Labour Party

A top GP and health expert is to spearhead a ‘Defend the NHS’ campaign event being held by Bury North Labour Party this Saturday (July 23rd).

Dr Aneez Esmail, a practicing clinician and Professor of General Practice at the University of Manchester, will outline his fears and misgivings about the Government’s shake-up of the NHS at the event, which is being held at Bury Met Studio Theatre from 2.30pm.

Dr Esmail, who was medical advisor to the Shipman Inquiry Chair Dame Janet Smith between 2001 and 2004, has a wealth of experience about the NHS, having practiced as a GP in the Manchester area from 1987 onwards, followed by duties as a public health physician.

He currently directs the ‘Masters in Public Health Programme’ at Manchester University, while retaining his front-line role as a clinician at an inner-city practice.

Alongside, Dr Esmail at this Saturday’s ‘Save the NHS’ campaign meeting will be Debbie Turner, Chair of Unison’s North West Regional Health Care Committee, supported by Paul Foley, who heads the union’s North West Region Health Group.

Bury North Labour Party Chair Steve Morton, says: “We feel strongly that the NHS is under threat, whatever the present Coalition Government says. So we have tried to focus attention on the issues involved and just what is at stake for the people of Bury.

“Naturally, the public are concerned about future provision of NHS services in Bury and we know there are major concerns from those who work in health provision.

“That is why we are delighted to have the opportunity to listen to the informed opinion of Dr Esmail, who has wide experience at many levels in the health profession. With the additional input of the union representatives, we can focus on just what is at stake.”

  2. "The Bury Action Group is a non party political campaigning group"

Yet it's funny how your opposition to the Council's cuts dries up when Labour now control the Council. And are inflicting even worse cuts on the people of Bury and are raising Council Tax by a ridiculous amount for the poor. Utter shame!
